Digital Scrapbooking 101: From Traditional to Digital !

Why should you Scrap your pictures?

Why put all of that work? Aren’t pictures just as good? Isn’t a digital scrapbook all about just the pictures? Scrapbooking is a lot more than just the pictures, is about the moment; is about your thoughts and feeling about that moment. Its about your creativity, is your work of art, is a gift to whom you are preserving the memories for, and to yourself.

Here is the picture of my daughter when she was 4 years old:

If I had not scrapped her comments, I would probably not remember them as well 20 years from now.

It is very common to create digital scrapbooks for our little ones, and who can blame us when they are cutest thing on earth, but I believe we should create digital Scrapbooks layouts for everyone: your husband, your mom (grandma), your dad (grandpa), your sister, your friends, and pets. You should create a digital scrapbook for anyone and anything close to your heart.

Here is the digital scrapbook page I created for my pet:

Preserving your memories is like creating your very own treasure, so unique as you. A treasure that no one can take away and at the same time, you can share it with everyone. And guess what, the older your scrapbook gets, the more value they have. I always think that if my house were ever to get on fire (God forbid) and I would only have 15 minutes to get anything out of the house, The first thing that I would do  (after getting my kids out) would be to get my picture albums and pictures CDs. That is my real treasure. And the funny thing is that it only has value for me.

It could be therapeutic to go over your scrapbooks and re-visit all of those wonderful memories. Times flies so fast that even scrapbooks completed a year ago, will make you rejoice those memories. So, if you were to ask me --does it really matter? Oh. My answer is: absolutely! Think of it as an investment in your soul.

What is Digital Scrapbooking?

Digital Scrapbooking is a way to preserve your memories using your Digital Pictures and Digital Scrapbook Elements. It is very similar to Traditional Scrapbooking, but the Scrapbooking elements are "Digital" or computer generated.
Digital Scrapbooks Layouts are composed of Digital Scrapbook Elements. For instance: Tags, Frames, Embellishments, Word Arts, backgrounds are all examples of Digital Scrapbook Elements. Most items in a digital scrapbook kit are digital scrapbook elements. The only exception is the Templates that are sometimes included on those kits. Templates are "Quick Pages" that contain digital scrapbook elements already arrange to complete a digital scrapbook.

Digital Scrapbooking have several advantages over Traditional Scrapbooking:

  • It is less expensive in the long run. The Digital Scrapbook Elements can be re-used endless of times and can be modified for a particular theme
  • Once the Digital Scrapbook Page has been completed it can easily be share with Family and Friends. You can share it over email, upload them on web, or you can print them and give them as “Just because Gifts”.
  • You can easy change the print size your digital scrapbooking to 12x12, 8x8, 4x4, and even 8x10!
  • It is very easy to back up your files PRIOR to working on your Digital Scrapbooks. This way, even if you make a mistake with a photo, you can always go back to your Original.
  • Digital Scrapbook Pages make it really easy to preserve your family history. When store on CDs, your Digital Scrapbooks can last for more than 100 years. So even your Great Grandkids will enjoy them!
  • Digital Scrapbook Pages can be completed faster with little experience. Once you become familiar with your Digital Photo Editor of choice, there is nothing stopping you.
  • Digital Scrapbooking is easier to organize than Traditional Scrapbooking and it takes less space!

How can I use digital Scrapbooking to preserve my memories?

Technically speaking digital scrapbook elements are images or photos. Just like the ones you take from your digital cameras or like the ones you scan from your scanner. This is a great advantage over traditional Scrapbooking because you can preserve them much more easily and longer. Digital Scrapbook store on CDs can last for more than 100 years. Can you image your great-great grand kids looking at your digital scrapbooks of the times when you were young, or their parents were babies. Can you image their smile on their face when they look at your outfits and wonder how did you dare wearing those clothes and shoes? So out of fashion! Can you think of a better inheritance? Ok. Fine. 100 millions would also be nice. :-) Digital Scrapbooking is more than just the present, is also about the future, and is about the generations to come. Image you are 80 years old (I do plan to live that long) and having so much time in your hands because your house is paid off, your kids are way gone and married, you are retire and no longer work. Now image that you had invested in creating your very own treasure and you have all of those digital scrapbooks to remind you of the good times.

The GIMP is a very powerful tool and it is very comparable to Adobe Photoshop Elements. The GIMP can open and modify Photoshop Templates in addition to JPEG, PNG, GIF and many more other image format.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you will need to go thru a learning curve, meaning that it might take a little time to learn how to use your new digital scrapbook software tools to create the desire results. This is truth for anything that you are learning new and it is also true for any other digital Scrapbooking software, including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements. The first tutorial: "The GIMP: Getting Started" was created with the intention of minimizing your learning curve.

Some people claim that The GIMP is very difficult to learn, and then go and buy Adobe Photoshop and then they claim that Adobe Photoshop is much easier to learn. What they have forgotten is that they became more experience with the time they spent learning The GIMP and by the time they started using Adobe Photoshop, their familiarity and understanding about Digital Scrapbooking was improved.

How long it might take to learn The GIMP? That really depends on your Digital Scrapbooking experience. If you are an experience Digital Scrap booker, it might take you a day. That is how long it took me, since I was already familiar with other Digital Scrapbooking software, like Paint Shop and Adobe Photoshop. For someone that is just starting, it might take a little longer, perhaps a week, really depending on your computer skills.

So take your time, bring your cup of coffee and enjoy your learning experience. You will not regret it.
