Changing alpha

Hi

What is a simple and easy way to convert paper to alpha? I tried Holly's tut but couldn't it to work the way she explained.

I think you can use this tutorial as a guide:

But instead of using a custom shape png file, you can just type a letter and use the shape of the letter.
