I just started with the Gimp, and I want to know how to keep elements transparant.

I'm glad that you found the tutorials useful!
To make an element transparent, like for an overlay: Under the Layers Dialog box: Select the layer that you want transparent and change the "Opacity" bar percentage. 100% Percent mean no opacity, less percent mean more opacity. The "Opacity" bar is right before the Mode pull down menu. Then save the image as PNG file. Note: If all you want is just to have a round image with the corners transparent, then just save the image as a PNG file. (e.g. file extension = .png, like myfilename.png) Gimp will take care of the rest. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
