Question on Shading?

I am stuck... what is the difference b/w shading and shadow? And how do you create shading in GIMP? Thanks

mmhhh... I can think of two different things.

Shadow - the area outside the photo

Shading - can this be when you use the dodge and burn tools, to change the color inside the elements (as opposed to the shadow which is outside)?

That is what come to my mind about this. :-)

to make the image alive.. something like that.. uhm.. and also to make it look 3D Graphic..
