Question Moving from CS2

Hi! I'm new here, and totally brand new to GIMP. My new computer causes my Photoshop CS2 program to be glitchy, so I am making the move to GIMP. I've been digiscrapping for about 7 years. I started with MS Digital Image Suite 10 (which I still love), moved to CS2, and now GIMP. I have been searching all over the Net, and so far this site is the only GIMP specific digital scrapbooking site I've been able to find. The forums seem to be very quiet...

So I have questions!
I have a whole bunch of PS actions. Can I use them in GIMP, or is there a work-around to use them?

If I'm correct, the Alpha to Selection is the method for "clipping mask", right? Are there any other "biggies" among Photoshop digiscrappers, technique-wise, that are different in GIMP?

Are there any other GIMP blogs or sites that are helpful? I found the manual online, and bookmarked that.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot here!!

Well... Welcome to our community!!! Things can get quite around here, but we do our best to support the ones that have questions. There are several GIMP users within our forum and one of our designers (88 Designs by M) strictly uses the GIMP to design her products.

The last time I heard about these, there were creating a GIMP plug-in to allow The GIMP to use Photoshop actions. I posted a thread in my blog:

http://scrapbooksgonedigital.blogspo...-you-know.html

The original blog can be found here:
http://maurits.wordpress.com/category/gimp/

I had never tested the plug-in... so I am not sure if it really works. :-)

- Yes. that is right.

- One thing that I haven't been able to do in the GIMP is to create a paper using colors from a gradient map... I know the GIMP has a gradient map but I haven't been able to create an overlay with different grey colors to a multiple color paper, which is something that I easily do with Photoshop.

- In the right side column of the SgD Blog, you can find some GIMP links that I had found to be helpful. The blog address is: http://scrapbooksgonedigital.blogspot.com/

if you find any other good ones, let me know and I will add them to that list.

Thank you for the fast reply! I have been to SourceForge, and frankly the whole site mystifies me. I don't understand what they are talking about and wouldn't know what I am downloading. I need it in plain English (not programmerspeak). Maybe someone has downloaded and used the plug-in who could comment? I took a look at "GIMPShop" last week and decided against downloading that because I wasn't sure it would work, and it was such an old version of GIMP I was leery of it. It would be awesome if a digiscrapper would compile the worthwhile thinks all in one place, with descriptions!

I must say I'm thrilled there is at least this ONE GIMP-only site!
I'll be around...

That's what I read too. I have Vista 64-bit and many programs, if not designed for x64, will work funky, or not at all, because of that. I wasn't about to take a chance on a program that was created five years ago. Do you know anyone who uses the action plug-in?

Hi and a big warm welcome to our forum here.
I hope you find the GIMP your next best friend, it's the only one I've ever used and I am enjoying the challenge of finding out how things work out in GIMP. Looking forward to your sharing of your layouts here.

Thank you, and me too! I played around with a layout yesterday for a long time. I started out with a template, then later tried to do one from scratch. I haven't been able to figure out how to make a shape (as in a template shape) to use for a piece of paper. Do I have to do this as a new document, or can I do it while my layout is open? I tried but I couldn't figure it out. This is something I do all the time in PS.

What I needed to do was cut a piece of paper-- a layer-- in half. Typically I make a shape, then add my paper, and use a clipping mask. I know the process now for simulating a clipping mask, and the tut is great, btw and thank you. But I can't make a rectangle for my paper.

SOOOoooo I'm sure I'll ask some annoying questions along the way!
