Problem with Gimp

Hey there,
I am a newbie to Gimp and have been working on trying to make my first scrapbook page using one of the tutorials from this site. I am having a problem with one of the first few steps where you are supposed to make a selection of the second paper--I right click and hold the mouse button down, but don't get any kind of an outline to show me what I am selecting. I do however get several menus that pop up. Hope that this makes sense.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!!

if so, which step is the one that is causing you trouble?

If you can, it would be great if you could post a snapshot of the screen, so I can see what you are doing.

if not, just mention the step that is causing your problems. From you description, I am not sure what step is causing you problems.

Hi there,
The tutorial that I was using was one of the video tutorials

Right before dragging, you have to select the "selection tool" from the GIMP Tools window, which is the first box. It looks like a rectangular dotted box.
Make sure you click on the title window of the second paper and then click on the selection tool, then do the dragging.

Just take a look at the steps right before the dragging, the video is showing them.

I did go back and try it again, and managed to finish a layout!! I did however find a few more things that cropped up that I have questions about. When I got to the step to scale my photo, there was no box that popped up like it showed on the video--so therefore no box to click for aspect ratio--I did discover that you can hold down control and alt buttons to accomplish the same thing. Another thing was when I went to add text to my layout--again there was no box to change font or size. I am wondering if there is something I am not doing to get these boxes to pop up or is there a new version that I need to download?? I have version 2.2.

Sorry to be such a pain! LOL!!

Congratulations on your first layout! I get very excited when I hear that new digital scrappers create their first layout with my GIMP tutorials. It means a lot to know that these tutorials are helpful to new digital scrappers.



Sometimes the pop up boxes pop up behind your GIMP windows and you can't see them. In some videos, I have move the GIMP windows around just to get to those pop up boxes.

The GIMP tutorials are written for the GIMP 2.2 version, so they should be close to what you are doing. There are newer version of the GIMP, I think the latest is GIMP 2.6, but I have not written tutorials on those versions yet.

Try checking to see if your pop up windows are behind your GIMP windows and let me know what happens.

You won't get pop up boxes for text size, you need to check your toolbox and the controls for all your text choices will be there.
This is 2.6 and I have added multiple tabs which you might not have but for the most part it should still look similar. (This box changes to give you the options for whichever tool you have selected, so if you have a brush selected it will show you brush options, text: text options...so you need to click on the A to get the text options)

The resize should give you a pop up box and in the older formats they do tend to hide under other boxes (a very nice change in 2.6 IMHO).

Hello all that posted,
Just wanted to let you know that I played around with Gimp a little bit more last night and I think I am getting the hang of it a little more. Found the little window for scale and aspect ratio when I double clicked on the scale tool. Slowly but surely--will try to get a layout posted soon!!
