You can, and I know GIMP users can open it... but I seem to have read that there may be some users who can't open it. Maybe there are paintshop and photoshop users here that will try opening a simple psd file from you to see if it can be done.

I started with some simple shapes. Squares, circles, etc. As you add them, put them on the page where you want them. When you save, do save as a psd file. I have been able to save as a psd file and others who do not use GIMP have been able to open them. Start simple. Maybe draw out a sketch of what you want first. I like to draw my own things so maybe if you do anything like that, then add a few of those. Think of it as a black and white LO. That may help you creat a page. Also, take a look at others who make templates and pick out what you like about them. When you put the pieces together, remember to make them different colors. I use different shades of black white and grey so that when you do a preview, then you can see where everything is. Hope I haven't confused you. I have a couple saved and wold be more than happy to pass them on to you so you can see how I did them. Just let me know if you would like to play with them!!

I have made templates with the gimp and have given them away as freebies on my blog. Generally I include PSD and XCF files inmy zip file. I haven't gotten complaints from anyone about opening them, and I happen to know that at least one of my templates worked fine for someone using photoshop.

I know that many other people in general also give out the png files for each layer as well. That would be a format not specific to any one type of program. I haven't figured out any easy and quick way to save each layer as a png though...it's doable manually but kind of a pain, I think, personally. Does anyone know of a easy way to do this?
