Hi,
I've been a photoshop elements user, but am trying to learn gimp. I like making my own shadows but I can't get the Gaussian blur to work in gimp. This is what I'm doing. I select my layer that I'd like to blur. Select Filters>Blur>Gaussian blur. It runs the filter but there is no change in to image. Can anyone help? Thanks so much! |

Hi there Karen,
it works for me. Try this, when the Gaussian Blur option window appears, ensure that the Horizontal & Vertical Blur Radius values are not set to 0. I have mine set to 5.0 px for both and the result show up in the preview window above. When you are satisfied with the look, select ok. Hope this helps. |

When making shadows, I use the light and shadow filter. From there, you can change the x and y offsets and the blur radius and the opacity. Try that and see if it works for you. I have used the Gaussian blur, but mostly for blurring the edges of something to make it a little more smooth. I have never used it for shadows. I always use the light and shadow filter in GIMP.

Hi Karen... are you remembering to remove your selection before doing Gaussian blur. If you do Gaussian blur on your selection it's not going to blur beyond the edges of the selection, so remember to 'select none' before running Gaussian blur. From there you can go ahead and wave the selection and so forth
I hope that helps you. It's the only thing I can think of that would make Gaussian blur appear to not work. |
