Default Tut - Installing fonts for use in GIMP

Hi guys,

not sure if this has come up as a thread before, but I put some basic steps together with screen shots on my blog on how to do this. Let me know if you found this useful.

Do you know of any way you can get it *not* to display the fonts in your regular fonts folder?

Normally, fonts get unzipped & installed in C:\Windows\Fonts and I'm guessing that's where GIMP looks by default. So try and create a fonts folder on a different directory/location. Then just put downloaded zipped in there for future use and see if this might work for you. I'm not sure if this is what you mean

Not entirely, that's what I already do. But I want GIMP not to look there by default, but just the GIMP folder. I can't remove stuff from the Windows folder or I won't have fonts to use with my other programs like Word and such (although they technically only require the core twenty or so fonts that you can't delete from the Windows file). I do a little bit of designing and then I need the CU fonts, but it's so hard to remember what is CU and what are my plain old fonts that I really enjoy using when I scrap for myself. It would be nice to have it look only in the GIMP folder for a while when I need just the CU fonts.

Looks like the Preference set up for the font folder doesn't even have the default windows font folder there. So the only thing I can think of is to temporary rename the windows font folder to something else. Have your CU font in a specific Gimp font folder and have this set up in your Preferences. Then restart Gimp or Rescan for fonts as per my tut. But I haven't tried this to see if it would work. Give it a go.

Default Installing fonts for use in GIMP on a Mac?

Has anyone done this on a Mac? It's not working for me.

When I go to refresh it only takes one second to refresh, so I'm doubting it's doing anything.

Was it Nikkiana that has a Mac I'm thinking could help here? Any other takers?

What version of the GIMP are you using? I am not sure if there are differences, but if I try it and it works for me, then it might or might not work for you depending on the GIMP version.

Thanks!

My husband fixed it up for me, but he being a programmer had to "talk" to the computer in a way that I didn't understand. I can't tell you how he did it ;-) He Googled for information and then just did it.
